Tonight before leaving class we had to break bad news to Adri, which she didn't take too well. We have had a rabbit for years that lives in a hutch outdoors. We let him out yesterday when we were playing (he always stays right near us), and forgot to put him back in his cage. When Matt went out a little later, Pig Pen was missing. He hasn't come back home yet and Matt is thinking that he found a girlfriend and took off.
When we told Adri that her rabbit was missing she took on a look of pure sadness. Her brown eyes got even bigger and her mouth went sad.
Adri: My rabbit is gone? No...
Me: Yes honey. Daddy thinks he met a friend.
Adri: But I love that bunny! I want him back! Will you go get him Mommy?
Me: Adri we can't. He's gone.
Adri: But Mommy! I love him! Please! My little bunny!
Me: Maybe after dinner you, Daddy, and Sammy can go outdoors and look for him.
No comment from Adri at this point as she tries to process the information about her rabbit.
Matt and I discussed if we should get her another rabbit and decided that we shouldn't. We feel that it would only show her that pets are replaceable and hers didn't mean that much. So, we will be pet free for a long time until someday when we get a dog (maybe).
