I should have included this sad news in my previous post, but I felt that it merited a post of it's own.
Our beagle mix, Scout went to live with Matt's parents two years ago after Buddy died (and I found out I was pregnant with Sammy). She wasn't used to children and had lost her best friend, so we felt that it wasn't fair to keep her in our house with Adri (who was only one at the time) and a new baby that was on the way. We were lucky that Matt's Dad loved her and agreed to take her in and give her a great life.
We didn't realize that she would be alive for only two more years after Buddy.
Today Matt's Dad called him with the news that Scoutie's condition from the previous past few weeks had deteriorated even more and that she would need to be put to sleep. Matt came home from work early to bring her in and spend those last precious minutes with her.
Scoutie was found when she was around a year old in 2001. I was driving down the road in Stanton and saw Scout walking down the middle of the road, in the rain, at dusk. Since I had almost hit her I knew there was no way that I could leave her there. I coaxed her into the car by bribing her with M&M's. Attempting to find the owner, I put a sign up at the local gas station with no replies, so I brought her home with me. Little did I know that Matt had had beagles when he was younger and would fall in love with her and decide to keep her.
As I said before, after Buddy passed away we decided that it wasn't fair to Scout to have to share the attention and Matt's parents took her in, showering her with their undivided attention and love. She was literally spoiled there, being the only pet between his Mom and Dad. I honestly believe that Matt's parents taking her in was the best thing that could have happened to her. They gave her the life she deserved and attention that she needed, making her last two years of life very happy ones. We are so grateful that they did this for us and for Scoutie.
Scout is now buried next to Buddy, under the matching tree that Matt planted when we moved in. We all said goodbye to her with Matt and Adri petting her one last time before we lowered her box into the ground. We explained that Scout was sick and was now with Jesus. Adri's understanding of this was that she had germs in her tummy, but now that she's with Jesus she doesn't have them anymore, and so she is happy now.
Goodbye Scoutie. Thank you for your companionship and love. We will never forget the memories you made with us and we will miss you dearly!
My very favorite photo of Buddy and Scout:
